Red Coral (Moonga)

Unlike other gemstones made of minerals, coral is an organic gemstone made by living things. Marine polyps that live in clear, tropical to subtropical waters at depths of 15 to 160 feet make up red coral. The coral is found deeper in the color spectrum. The most desirable type is a deep ox-blood red coral. Red coral is a soft, porous material with a Mohs hardness of 3.5. With little obvious cleavage, it is mostly calcium carbonate.
